This is part 7 of 8 of making our beliefs work for us rather than them working against us. If need be, go back and re-read the prior six lessons on this subject. Doing so will help you to make the most of this and grasp the bigger picture.
Last week I challenged you with two different tasks. The first was to find the root of why it was you believe what you do because it is the why that will help to set you free. Secondly, once you found the why, you then need to replace that belief with something different, a new phrase or even a (re-worded) affirmation to help you change what you believe.
At this point, we have addressed a handful of things you need to make the changes in order to believe something different. There is only one more piece to this equation that you will need, in order to believe in a way which will work for you and not against you. It is probably the most important piece so I have decided to save it for last, and that is: ask God to help you with your transition.
No, I am not talking about religion here or joining a church, I am talking about genuinely asking God to help you change your life for the better. After all, you are making some improvements in your life and seeking help from a source who truly cares about you and your well-being is a good idea. I lean on Him often for help and the transformation I have personally gone through over the years still leaves me in awe of what He has helped me accomplish. I look at it a lot like a Father / Son role. If you are a Father, don’t you want the best for your kids? Don’t you want them to make better choices? Doesn’t it make you feel good when your kids trust in you and seek you for help? Asking Him to help you can make a night and day difference as you move toward making the needed changes in your life. Don’t be afraid of doing this, just like a Father hopes his son or daughter will seek him for help, so also, does God.
Now we have to apply and combine these concepts and ideas to we have been talking about over the last 7 weeks and put some action to them. For it is the action that will start the process of change. Then you will need to expect things to happen. Don’t wish for them, don’t hope for them, but expect them. Know that you are worth more than what you think you are worth right now. Believe in you and believe that God will help you change. Stay focused on all of those steps and ideals we have covered. Upon taking the first step, you will find that the following steps will become easier. Mainly because success builds success and added success increases your confidence level, which empowers you to stay the course. Just like when NASA launches a space shuttle, it is the very first 18” of lift that require a tremendous amount of energy to even make it leave the earth. This is a lot like you and me when we begin to make significant changes in our lives. It takes a serious amount of effort and focus to get the process going. But like the space shuttle, once we are on our way, it becomes 10 times easier to keep going.
Next week, we will finish this series and I will leave you with some key information you will need regarding your beliefs.
Until then, have a great Friday and be blessed.

Part 6 of 7 on our Beliefs.

Part 1 of 7: Our Beliefs
Last week I gave you some insight into how what we believe, controls and mostly dictates our life. I said that we are a Prisoner to our Beliefs . If you did not read last week’s message on this, I want to encourage you to go back and read it first before reading this one. In doing so, you will gain a deeper understanding of what we are going to cover this week: Realizing those deep- rooted personal beliefs that hold us back.
Ok, first things first here. Do you truly want to change some things about your life? Do you really want a different outcome than what you have been getting? If you are serious about making some changes, then I have some good news for you: Yes, you can change your life and it will start by changing what you believe. No, I am not going to try to make you believe you can defy gravity or with enough positive thinking you can make it stop raining outside. What I am talking about is you and your beliefs. It has nothing to do with the external but everything to do with the internal.
You and I have developed our beliefs usually by our past experiences; how we were raised and what our surroundings taught us. True, it does not matter if it is wrong or right, it just is what it is. It’s a program that runs in our brains and every time we want to know if something is true or not, good or bad, right or wrong, our minds turn to that old file (what we experienced or were taught or what we saw in the past). It then gives us a belief which results in an answer for what we are seeking. This is the basis of every belief you and I have ever had. It does not matter what the subject is, it just matters we understand every one of us operates from this place.
If you want a different outcome from what you have been experiencing in your life, you will need to change what it is you believe. To do this is not rocket science, nor is it complex. It will, however require that you truly want a different outcome, and make a conscious effort every day to do so. If you can be true to yourself with these two requirements, then yes, you can create a different outcome and get what you truly want out of life. You see, our minds are nothing more than a computer (A darn good one I might add) and as with any computer, it can be reprogrammed. I know, because I have done it and have met many other people who have also done it. Like I said, this is not rocket science, but the process of reprogramming your own computer will not be easy. So if you are going to do this, your desire will have to be strong enough to carry you through the difficult times during the process. Trust me on this, it will be well worth it! I am a living testimony of reprogramming what we believe.
For now, you will need to make a list of the things you want to change about yourself. Yes, write it down. No, a mental list is not good enough, you need to see and read those things which you put on your list. There is power in doing this, don’t take it lightly. Your list might only be a few things or it might be a dozen things. There is no right or wrong here, it’s your list. An example of some beliefs you might put on your list could be: I have always weighed too much so I always will; I don’t deserve to be happy; I know I will never be rich; I have always been this way and always will be; I guess I deserve to be alone.
Go ahead and make your list. What do you believe to be true about yourself but wish you could change? Next week we will dive into part 2 of this re-programming process.
Have a great Friday everyone, be blessed.

Are our beliefs working for us or against us
In early December, I was outside mowing my backyard. Not very common for this time of year, I know, but it needed to be done so I took the time to do it. As I was mowing, I could hear my Dad’s voice inside my head telling me: “it’s too wet outside, you don’t mow grass when it’s wet - it has to be dry.” Interestingly enough, it has probably been over 25 years since my Dad told me that. Yet, even after all this time, I can still hear that statement in my head and Dad was serious about it. Mowing the lawn when it is wet is not something we do. I never really knew why, I just knew that if I ever did it and my Dad found out, I would have been in big trouble.
My Dad had a strong belief that mowing the grass when it was wet was wrong. Yet on every golf course across this country, rain or shine, the grass on the greens and the fairways are mowed constantly to keep them in ideal condition. Lawn maintenance companies in every town and city keep their customers grass cut and trimmed to an attractive length, no matter if it rains or not. This alone tells us that there really is no right or wrong about this subject, there is only a belief about the way we think it should be. Ironically enough, this is mostly the way you and I live our life. We live, do and operate around what it is we believe to be true. It does not matter what the subject is. We are all a prisoner to our own personal beliefs because what we believe to be true is the very thing that either holds us back, or pushes us forward to what we want in our life.
Even having a low self esteem stems from the lack of belief in yourself that you are worthy, valuable and important. Do you seek to make twice the amount of money this year as you did last year? Get real with you for a minute and ask yourself if you truly believe that you are worth making that much money. Then, ask yourself: do you believe you can make that much money. It’s not a matter of how you will make the money. It’s a matter of believing you can.
Looking to land the ideal job? Look in the mirror and ask yourself: Am I really worth a job like this. If you can’t say yes with a fair amount of confidence and self assurance, then there is a good chance inside of you somewhere that you really don’t believe you are worth it and if you don’t believe it, it will never come to be. Even the Bible talks to us about our beliefs repeatedly. Jesus performed miracles and it wasn’t because he was some sort of magic man, it was because he believed in himself and who he was. You and I will always be a prisoner to what we believe, good or bad, healthy or unhealthy, it does not matter.
Some of us have such deep rooted beliefs that they do us far more harm then good and upon changing them, we would be pleasantly surprised at just how different life would look for us. I like to refer to this as making our beliefs work for us, not against us.
Doing this will guarantee us a different life but those old beliefs will not leave you willingly, they will put up a fight. If you truly want to change them, the first step is becoming aware that they could be holding you back. Even though I changed my belief about mowing the grass when it is wet, that old belief still tries to pop up and remind me that I shouldn’t mow the grass when it is wet. The key here is to choose to override it and make a new belief – one that works for you rather than against you.
Our beliefs control us in what we do, say, act and how we live our life. I am going to take the next 7 weeks and cover a series about how to become aware of unhealthy beliefs and how you can re program them. Stay tuned for next week when we start part 1 of beliefs.

Kids: Amazing Aren't They?
There is no doubt that kids are just amazing. The things they do and say continue to amaze me over and over again. The creative ability of a young child is something adults can learn a lot from. How they ask for things, how they present us (their parents) with options rather than just a yes or no question. You have to admit, they are pretty good at asking for what they want. But they can also not fully comprehend the power of the words they say.
I have two daughters and the youngest one is three years old. From time to time, I will challenge her to do something she never has done before, like riding her bicycle (with training wheels of course) in the grass or through a patch of gravel. Something that will not hurt her but will challenge her. When I do this, often her response to me is, "But I can't." Which I always reply in a stern voice, "Don't tell me you can't, tell me you can."
My kids, like everyone else's, don't always do what they are supposed to do. They don't always listen and even once in a while, they will test their boundaries with me. All of these things I can handle, accept and deal with in the right manner but hearing my child say "I can't" strikes a nerve within me that makes me cringe! “Don't tell me you can't, tell me you can” is something I think more kids need to hear on a regular basis. Why? Because I believe kids can and do grow up to do great things if they believe they can. Hearing positive reinforcement and encouraging words from their parents may very well be one of the best things we can give them.
Our subconscious mind does not know the difference between "I can't” and “I can." It just knows whatever it hears, over and over again, is what it accepts as truth. The words we speak into our children of all ages, is nothing more than programming. This goes into their memory or subconscious mind so that in their future, they will have a "guide" to go by, helping them make choices and decisions as they go through life. The stories of young kids, some even as young as seven or eight years old, accomplishing extraordinary tasks, all started with a parent, a teacher, a mentor and/or even a friend telling them "you can do it" early on in their life. It all started with what they heard.
I have never met a parent who did not want their kids to have a better life than they did. One of the best ways to help them have a better life is to speak the right words into them. I don't need my kids to be the next Albert Einstein or even be a winner on American Idol. Ultimately, that decision is between them and God. But I do want them to be confident and secure enough in who they are and their belief in themselves. Then they can have, earn and achieve anything in this world their hearts desire.
Speak life and encouragement into your kids. Down the road you will be glad you did.
Have a great Friday everyone.
